If you want to jailbreak your iPhone, here are some easy steps to follow on your jailbreaking quest.

To “jailbreak” your iPhone means you are freeing it from the limitations imposed by AT&T and Apple. Why would anyone want to jailbreak their iPhone, you ask—well, there are actually a lot of good reasons to, but also a few not to as well. First, after jailbreaking your iPhone you gain access to third-party applications, customize the look of your phone, and also lets you unlock your iPhone to make it available on other carriers. Now, once you jailbreak your iPhone you’ve voided your warranty so you’re basically on your own for any other problems that may spring up. Apple and AT&T don’t look kindly on customers who bring in an unlocked iPhone.

But if you’re up for the task it’s a pretty simple process, and for those of you wanting that freedom then here are some simple steps to follow using iPhone jailbreaker extraordinaire George Hotz’s BlackRa1n.

   1. Go to http://www.blackra1n.com and click either the Windows icon or the Apple icon, depending on the hardware you’re downloading this file to.

   2. Create a new folder on your Mac or PC desktop to store the jailbreak download. Run the download.
   3. Connect your iPhone to your computer and then launch iTunes
   4. Click on “make it ra1n.” Your iPhone is now in recovery mode and a GeoHot (blackra1n creator George Hotz) picture may pop up.
   5. Blackra1n will run on your iPhone and then it will reboot.
   6. If the jailbreak is successful a pop-up will come up asking you to donate to the site—donations are up to you, but it’s always nice to repay the favor.
   7. Once your iPhone reboots, you will notice the blackra1n icon on your springboard. Make sure you have internet connection and then launch BlackRa1n on your iPhone.
   8. Choose what installer applications you want on your iPhone and then tap “Install”. We suggest installing Cydia—when this is done installing, you will see the Cydia app icon on your springboard.
   9. Now, uninstall BlackRa1n by launching the app and selecting “uninstall balckra1n.”
  10. Now, reboot your iPhone and enjoy your freedom.
