How to make USB Bootable for Window 7/Vista

Step1: Create Bootable USB Drive:

   1.Start PowerISO (v4.8 or newer version, download here).
   2.Insert the USB drive you intend to boot from.
   3.Choose the menu "Tools > Create Bootable USB Drive". The    "Create Bootable USB Drive" dialog will popup. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system, you need confirm the UAC dialog to continue.
   4. In "Create Bootable USB Drive" dialog, click "..." button to open the iso file of Windows 7.
   5.Select the correct USB drive from the "Destination USB Drive" list if multiple USB drives are connected to the computer.

How To Use Virtual Hard Disk Files?...

You can now create and manage virtual hard disks files in Windows 7 as if they were real disks. This can allow you to use a live Windows installation on the virtual disk without the need to boot the virtual Computer. To create a virtual disk you have to press the Windows Key, right-click on Computer, then go to Manage -> Disk Management -> Action -> Create VHD. There you can specify the location and size of your virtual hard disk file.

To attach the virtual disk file, press the Windows Key, right-click Computer, then go to Manage -> Disk Management -> Action -> Attach VHD and you have to specify the location and if it’s read only or not.

To initialize a virtual hard disk, press the Windows Key, right-click on Computer, go to Manage -> Disk Management -> Action -> Attach VHD, specify the location, click Ok, then right click on the virtual disk and click on Initialize Disk. Select the partition style you want to use and then right-click on the unallocated space and click “New Simple Volume” and follow the instructions wizard. Now, a new hard drive appears in Windows Explorer and you can use it as a real partition.

I rarely let anyone use my PC because I’m afraid he will mess it up, but it seems Microsoft has been thinking at me and came with a solution. The PC Safeguard doesn’t let anyone mess your PC settings, because after the user logs off, the configurations are reset back to normal. Of course it will not restore the configurations changed by you, but only the ones done by other users you define.

To use PC Safeguard, go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and create a new account, then select “Set Up Pc Safeguard” and switch it on. Then you can stay relaxed when others use your computer, because you won’t find anything changed, including configurations, downloaded software, installed programs.

Advanced Disk Defragmentation

Fortunately, Windows 7 offers much better defragmentation than Vista and also lets you configure it a bit from the command line.

To do it, press the Windows Key and then type “CMD”.

You can defragment your hard disk from the command line by typing “defrag” and you have the following options: “/r” will defrag multiple drives simultaneously, “-a” performs a defrag analysis, “-v” prints the report, “-r” treats files with at least 64 Mb of fragments like are not fragmented, “-w” will defrag everything. An example is “defrag C: -v -w” to defrag the whole drive C.

Remove taskbar buttons

One problem with the previous tip is the buttons will gobble up valuable taskbar real estate, but you can reduce the impact of this by removing their text captions. Launch REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics, add a string called MinWidth, set it to 54, and reboot to see the results.

Windows 7 now combines taskbar buttons in a way that saves space, but also makes it more difficult to tell at a glance whether an icon represents a running application or a shortcut. If you prefer a more traditional approach, then right-click the taskbar, select Properties, and set Taskbar Buttons to "Combine when taskbar is full". You'll now get a clear and separate button for each running application, making them much easier to identify.

The new Windows 7 taskbar acts as one big quick launch toolbar that can hold whatever program shortcuts you like (just right-click one and select Pin To Taskbar). And that's fine, except it does consume a little more screen real estate than we'd like. Shrink it to a more manageable size by right-clicking the Start orb, then Properties > Taskbar > Use small icons > OK.

Remove Recyle Bin from Control Panel

Navigate to following address:
1.Control Panel > All control Panel Items > Personalization
2.On left side pane Click on Change Desktop Icons
    This would popup Desktop Icon Settings
3. Uncheck Recycle Bin
4.  Press Ok to Remove Recycle Bin with immediate effect.

How to disable restrict USB/Flash Drive in Windows 7

Recently one of my friend asked me how a USB drive can be disabled on a particular computer. So it‟s a pretty much Registry Tweak.
To disable the access to USB port, in windows XP, Vista and Windows 7:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type regedit, and then click OK. (Or simply open registry)
3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
4. In the right pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, change its value to 4, which was 3 and then click OK.

Customize the Log-On Screen

This is not a new ability, but in the past, there were some potentially dangerous hacks required to get it working. Now, with Windows 7, it just requires a few small changes:

    * Start the registry editor and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background
    * Double-click the DWORD key called OEMBackground (or create it if it's not there) and set it to a value of "1"
    * Find a background image that is less than 256KB in size, and that matches the aspect ratio of your current screen so it is not distorted
    * Copy the image to the following folder - %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds (you may have to create the \info\backgrounds folder if it doesn't exist)
    * Rename the image file to backgroundDefault.jpg, and reboot
    * You should now have your customized logon page

If you are concerned with messing with the registry, and in the system folders, there are various tools that will handle the changes for you. Logon Changer lets you change the background, while Logon Screen Rotator will allow you to cycle through several pictures on your logon screen.

Old Style Context Menus

In a previous post (found here) I showed you how to use the context menus, and how to access some of the old commands you used to see when you would right click on a taskbar icon. Well, a shortcut to see those "old" options is to hold down the "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys when you right-click a taskbar icon, and you'll see those old favorites like Restore, Maximize, Move and others.

Calibrate Screen Colors

Computer screens vary greatly so that something that looks great on one screen, might look a little off on another. One thing you can do is to calibrate your monitor or laptop screen to compensate for different video cards, monitors, lighting conditions, etc.
To run the Display Color Calibration Wizard, click the "Start" button, and type "DCCW" without the quotes, and hit Enter. Now just follow the prompts to tweak your monitor to perfection.

If you need to quickly connect your system to a projector, just hit the Windows key and the "P" key simultaneously (alternately, you can click "Start" and type "displayswitch.exe" and Enter, but why would you), and pick the display type you wish. The calculator has always been a useful little app, but it's been super-sized in Windows 7. At first glance, it looks like the same old calculator, but if you click on the "View" option in the toolbar, you'll see they've added several new features, to include:

    * A unit conversion calculator that lets you convert things like angles, area, energy, temperature, pressure, and a bunch more
    * A date calculator that can determine the span between two days (in days, weeks, months and years, or simply in days)
    * A series of worksheets that can be used to calculate Mortgage Rates, Vehicle Lease Rates, and Fuel economy in moth MPG and L/100 KM.

How to System Repair Disk in windows 7

Nothing is more frustrating than realizing your system has been corrupted, and is no longer operable. One thing that can help you get your system back up and running, is a System Repair Disk, and it's a very simple process. To create a System Repair Disk:

    * Click the "Start" button
    * Select "Maintenance"
    * Select "Create a System repair Disc"

Windows 7 will then create a System Repair Disc. If your system ever takes a turn for the worse, this disk, and the data it contains, can save your bacon.

Problem Steps Recorder

Problem Steps Recorder - This is a small application that lets you record whatever mouse-clicks, key presses, etc., that you do, along with several screen grabs, then packages the whole thing up in a zipped MHTML file.
To run this program:

    * Click Start
    * Type "PSR" without the quotes, and hit enter
    * Click the record button, and take whatever actions are not working currently on your computer
    * When you click "stop", enter the name of the file

You can now send this to just about anyone, and they'll see what you saw, along with some diagnostic information.

Disable Unwanted Start Up Items and Speed Up Windows 7 Start Up

* Type ” msconfig ” in the “RUN” option from start menu press [Enter] to open up the System Configuration Utility.
    * Now navigate to the “StartUp” tab.
    * Untick the Entries which are not needed

This really matters when you have installed a lot of softwares on your PC. Many software such as AcdSee will run services such as device detector etc during the system start up. These are of no use actually for most windows users. So preventing such services from starting up during the start up of windows 7 can result in quicker start Ups. This will actually save some seconds during windows 7 start up.

Turn OFF Windows 7 Screen Saver and Wallpaper

    * Right click on desktop and choose “Personalize”.
    * Click the Screen Saver link ” From the Screen Saver drop down menu, Set it to “None” and click         “Apply” and then “OK”.
    * Now click on “Desktop Background” link.
    * From the “Location” drop down menu select “Solid Colors” and pick one color and click “OK”.

In order to display the wallpaper and screen saver the system needs some memory. So by disabling those two we can save a few Mega Bytes of memory.
