On February 4, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg – a Harvard student – launched “Thefacebook”, originally located at thefacebook.com as a website where he and his classmates could share school notes. Membership on Facebook was initially restricted to students of Harvard College but inevitably expanded to Stanford, Columbia, and Yale after barely a month of the site’s online existence. Eventually, students from other Ivy League universities and most universities in Canada and the US joined Facebook and greatly contributed
to making the social networking site a smashing success in the Academe. In June 2004, Facebook moved its base of operations to Palo Alto, California.
